7 Simple Ways to Reduce Plastic and Forever Chemicals at Home

Writer's picture: Kristi SaboKristi Sabo

Hey Friends,

We have talked about what phthalates are and how to avoid them in a previous post. Today we are looking at forever chemicals, like PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), are synthetic chemicals that resist breaking down in the environment. They're found in a surprising number of household products and can build up in our bodies over time. The health risks? Hormone disruption, weakened immune systems, and even cancer. Yikes, right?

Here are seven super doable steps to start reducing your exposure today:

1. Ditch Nonstick Cookware

Nonstick pots and pans often contain PFAS. Switch to safer alternatives like stainless steel or cast iron. Bonus: they’re durable and can last for generations.

2. Choose Glass or Stainless Steel for Food Storage

Say goodbye to plastic containers. Glass and stainless steel are chemical-free, reusable, and better for the environment. Plus, they make your leftovers look fancy!

3. Filter Your Water

This one is huge! Many tap water sources are contaminated with forever chemicals. Invest in a high-quality water filter, like one certified to remove PFAS. Your body (and taste buds) will thank you. There are fairly inexpensive countertop versions to make this a great first healthy step.

4. Avoid Stain-Resistant and Water-Repellent Fabrics

Clothing, furniture, and carpets labeled as “stain-resistant” or “water-repellent” often contain PFAS. Opt for untreated, natural fibers like cotton, wool, or hemp.

5. Go Fragrance-Free or carefully choose your fragrance sources

Just like phthalates, artificial fragrances can include hidden chemicals. Choose fragrance-free or naturally scented products for your beauty, cleaning, and laundry needs. Look for products that are phthalate-free.

6. Check Your Household Cleaners

Scan labels for terms like “fluoro” or “PTFE.” Many cleaning products sneak in forever chemicals, but greener alternatives are readily available. A Google search will yield some easy healthy alternatives. And I will have an eBook of easy resources ready for you shortly. :)

7. Say No to Single-Use Plastics

Plastic wraps, bags, and disposable utensils often contain harmful chemicals. Use beeswax wraps, cloth bags, and bamboo utensils instead. They’re reusable, eco-friendly, and just plain cute.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Stay informed. Apps like EWG’s Healthy Living can help you identify safer products.

  • Speak up. Support brands and legislation that prioritize chemical safety.

  • Recycle wisely. Not all plastics are created equal; know what can and cannot be recycled in your area.

Reducing your exposure to plastics and forever chemicals doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with one or two of these changes, and you’ll be making a big impact on your health and the environment. Small steps, big difference!
